FAQs

Information and Changes

Your owner number shows which Chesapeake wells are connected to you. We’ll ask for your owner number when we talk or email with you.

Your owner number is unique to you and can be found:

You can request a Change of Address by logging into your EnergyLink account and completing the form online. Alternatively, you may download the Change of Address form (English / Espanol) and follow the accompanying instructions. This form can be submitted by either mail or email. Address changes cannot be handled by telephone.

Changes in ownership or owner status for land and mineral rights require updated title records. Owners must have the appropriate documentation for each type of change, and requirements depend on the state where you live. For Louisiana instructions, click here and for Pennsylvania residents, click here.

A division order is a record of your interest in a specific well. It contains your decimal interest, interest type, well number and well name.

Division orders are issued:

In all cases, you should only receive a division order if your interest has been affected by some change that has occurred. Upon examination of your division order (see example), you should keep one copy for your records and send an executed copy back to Chesapeake.

Payments

Direct deposit, or electronic funds transfer (EFT), is an option for our revenue interest owners with accounts drawn within the United States.
Download the direct deposit form (English / Espanol) to begin enrollment or you may enroll by logging into your EnergyLink account.

If you elect to receive electronic payments, you will no longer receive your payment detail by mail. However, you can access the detail online via your EnergyLink account.

Chesapeake generates and mails revenue checks on the last business day of each month. If your account is in a “pay” status and has reached the minimum payment amount of $100.00 or the amount required by applicable state statute, a check should be issued. If you have not received your check by the 15th of the following month, please contact Owner Relations.

Each revenue check includes details on the payment and the well’s production. See an example of a revenue check stub here.

We encourage owners to keep their revenue check stubs for tax reasons. We’re not able to provide duplicate revenue check stubs, but revenue details can be found on EnergyLink after you enroll in direct deposit.

Checks presented to the issuing bank after 90 days are considered “stale dated” and your bank may not deposit them. To reissue a stale-dated check, please return it to the address below. Chesapeake will include the returned check’s amount, with full detail, on your next revenue check.

Until we have a valid Tax Identification Number or Social Security Number on file for you, the Internal Revenue Service requires that we withhold 24% of all revenues (30% for foreign residents) until the information is provided. Complete and submit a W-9 (English / Espanol) to contact@expandenergy.com to avoid future withholdings.

There are different circumstances that may impact the arrival of your check. These include:

If your situation is not described above, contact Owner Relations.

Lease obligation payments are payments due under the terms of a lessor’s oil and gas lease, excluding royalty payments. These additional payments could include lease bonuses, rentals, options to extend, shut-ins, minimum royalty, surface bonuses and surface rentals.

Each lease obligation payment check comes with a detailed check stub as shown in this example. We recommend keeping your check stubs for tax purposes.

Lease obligation payments are issued weekly and typically delivered via certified U.S. Mail. Payments may be temporarily withheld when Chesapeake receives a notice of an ownership change (Louisiana / Pennsylvania) or when there is not an address on file. Payments are accumulated and will release once we receive all necessary documentation.

If you have not received your check by the due date as determined on the lease and/or surface agreement, please contact Owner Relations.

Taxes and 1099 Forms

A Form-1099 is a collection of tax forms used to report non-employee income for tax purposes. It is documentation to be provided to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to show payments made by an individual or business that isn’t your employer.

Chesapeake is responsible for completing the appropriate 1099 tax form and sending it to you. See a sample of a 1099 form here.

The Form 1099-Miscellaneous Income statement reports an owner’s gross income paid by Chesapeake prior to any other deductions or taxes. The form also lists any state or U.S. withholding amounts deducted from a revenue check.

Royalty owners who were issued at least $10 during the calendar year should receive a Form 1099-Miscellaneous Income statement. The IRS does not require Chesapeake to furnish a 1099-Miscellaneous Income statement to foreign, nonprofit or incorporated owners.

The Form 1099-NEC Income statement reports an owner’s gross income paid by Chesapeake. The form will also list any state or U.S. withholding amounts deducted from a revenue check.

Working interest owners who were issued at least $600 during the calendar year should receive a Form 1099-NEC Income statement. The IRS does not require Chesapeake to furnish a 1099-NEC Income statement to foreign, nonprofit or incorporated owners.

Chesapeake will mail 1099 forms by Jan. 31. If you do not receive your 1099 by Feb.15, please contact Owner Relations and have your owner number available.

Revenue is reported on the appropriate forms for the year in which the check was issued, regardless of when the owner receives the check.

Form 1099-Miscellaneous will be posted to your EnergyLink account when available.

At this time, Form 1099-NEC Income statements are not available online.

To request a copy of your 1099 after Feb. 15, login to your EnergyLink account to check availability. If the form has not yet posted, contact Owner Relations. and have your owner number and the last four digits of your Tax Identification Number or Social Security Number available.
